Catlinite Pipes
Pipe bowls with decorative or symbolic lead inlays were made by Sioux Nations as early as the first half 19th century. Still the subject matter was often traditional and spiritual, inspired by mythe and the vision quest. Birds were messengers of the superior powers or themselves embodied the mysteries. |

Traditional Pipes
The successful hund and these memberment of the buffalo were followed by a dance to celebrate and to honor the buffalo and the brave hunters. Cerimonial items including weapons, were used in the dance. These pipes are the epitome of such items. Its blade recognizes the hunter and its usable pipe is a spiritual offering. |
